AUDIOLOGY SERVICES

Comprehensive Audiological Evaluations for patients of all ages ranging from
newborn to geriatric.

Our comprehensive audiological evaluations for adults include:

  1. Basic Audiologic Battery. The audiologist evaluates your hearing by detecting the
softest level of sound audible at different pitches and for speech. This establishes
the degree and nature of any hearing loss.
  2. Acoustic Immittance Testing. This encompasses Tympanometry and Acoustic
Reflex assessment. Tympanometry evaluates the status of the eardrum and
middle ear structures. Acoustic reflexes offer a way to screen for retrocochlear
problems. These are objective measures that require no input from the patient.
  3. Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions (DPOAE) testing. This test evaluates
the function of the outer hair cells in the cochlea. This is an objective measure
that requires no input from the patient.

The comprehensive audiological evaluation for pediatric patients differs based on the child's age. Often, two audiologists work together using one or more of the following procedures to determine the level of hearing for different tonal pitches and for speech.

  1. Tympanometry assesses the status of the eardrum and middle ear structures
    without input from the child
  2. Distortion Product Otoacoustic emissions allow the audiologist to assess the outer
hair cell function of the cochlea without a response from the patient.
  3. Behavioral Observation Audiometry is used for 0-6 month old infants. Hearing
levels are determined based on the child's reaction to various sounds. For
instance, infants often raise their eyebrows when they hear a sound.
  4. Visual Reinforcement Audiometry is used for 6 month' 2 year olds. This method
uses mechanical toys to reinforce the child turning toward a heard sound.
  5. Play Audiometry is used for children 3-5 years old. Hearing levels are
determined based on the child's play with toys like blocks and puzzles.

Advanced Diagnostic Testing (ABR)

What is the test?

Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) aids in the differential diagnosis of hearing and balance disorders. This test allows the audiologist to detect any abnormalities in the pathway from the ear to the lower brainstem.

What to expect.

The test generally takes 20-30 minutes to perform. Four surface electrodes are placed on the patient's head and ears. The electrodes record very small electrical signals. The patient will hear a series of clicks in each ear, delivered via earphones.

The patient's role in testing.

The patient lies down on a table at a slight incline throughout the test. The patient is expected to lie very still with eyes gently closed. The test records very small electrical signals in the body. Muscle movement and eye blinks generate a large electrical signal that masks the electrical charge from the hearing nerve.

How to Prepare for the test.

Hearing aid satisfaction is based on many factors like patient motivation, realistic expectations, and proper fit. The audiologist will work diligently to make sure the hearing fit is optimal and will work with the patient to establish good hearing habits.

Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs) and other Hearing Accessories ALDs are devices, other than hearing aids, that help the hearing impaired in various situations. Some of these devices work in tandem with the user's hearing aid. Others work independently of hearing aids. Some of the following items are accessories useful for persons without hearing loss.

  1. EH®. This is an adapter for hearing aids which allows a person to use blue tooth
devices, like a mobile phone, in a hands-free fashion.
  2. Custom earmold for cell phones or mp3 players. A custom mold attaches to
wireless cell phone adapters or personal earbuds. This offers better retention,
greater comfort, and superior sound quality.
  3. Hearing protection. We offer many types of hearing protection for people who work or play near excessive noise levels.
  4. Custom swim molds. Custom molds keep ears dry in the pool or in the shower.
These are often used by children or adults with chronic middle ear problems or PE
    tubes.
  5. TV Ears®. This is a wireless headset used for television viewing. It allows the
wearer to control the volume they hear independent of the actual volume of the
TV. Family members can watch TV comfortably with their hard-of-hearing loved
    one.
  6. FM. This two-part system includes a link to a person's hearing aid and a remote
microphone. The microphone is placed near a speaker to offer direct and wireless
communication to the hearing aid user, resulting in better speech-in-noise
    understanding.
  7. Custom musician plugs. These custom molds have special filters that allow for
noise protection, while maintaining the integrity of the musical piece.
  8. Earplanes. These disposable ear pieces aid in equalizing pressure during air
travel. This product is ideal for patients who have pain on descent.
